Tiny Drawings

These days I'm living in a tiny house, and finding it difficult to make space for the big drawings I used to do.  So instead of a few big drawings a year, I'm focused on lots of little drawings.  Each week, I create a new tiny drawing based on whatever I happen to be thinking about that week.  Each original drawing will be framed, and will be available for sale at the Bucksport Arts Festival this summer or later on my Etsy shop.

Here are the first few weeks:

Stay tuned for more throughout the year, and visit my facebook page to see each drawing when it is completed!

Lots of New Goodies!

Per usual, it's been a little while since I posted so I have a lot of new things to share!  First off, my new 2014 card is officially for sale!

Visit my Etsy page to buy yours today, and while you're there check out my three latest drawings:

If you're not in the mood to shop online, and you're lucky enough to be in the Bangor area this month, you can also find me at two events on Saturday, November 22nd.  First, I'll be at the 10th Annual Hermon Cub Scout Craft Fair from 9-3 at the Hermon Elementary School.  Then, from 7:00-9:30 pm I'll be at the Arts for the Arts fundraiser to restore the historic Wilson Hall building in Bucksport.  Check out the poster below for more details and the location:

As promised, here are photos of my complete frames:

I've been meaning to frame these as a matched set for a long time, so they were a great practice round for my entry into the world of frame building.  I chose nice pieces of cherry stock from the lumber yard and cut everything down to size with the tablesaw.  I cut the corners by hand with a miter saw, so unfortunately some corners are far from perfect.

After everything was cut, I glued and clamped the corners:

Once everything was dry, I then drilled out the back of each corner and glued in a 3/4" cookie instead of using dowel pins or nailing the corner.

I cut the cookies flush to the frames with a pull saw, but had a bit of a problem when I started sanding the first frame.  I set the frame down on it's corner and the cookie split right in half, busting open the corner with it!  I re-glued the corner and sanded all of the frames smooth, but didn't trust the rest of the corners to hold.

So it bought this little beauty:

It's a v nail driver with a built in clamp!  It's so easy to use and will save a lot of time securing each corner.  And the best part is: I don't have to worry about my corners busting open again.

I used a clear danish oil on the wood once all the corners were repaired.  Two coats brought out just the color I was looking for, and match another framed piece I have hanging nearby.  I packaged up each frame and secured the back with a point nailer:

And finally, I screwed on the hangers and hung the set in my kitchen!

I'll be building a lot more in the next few months and will hopefully have a good supply built by the end of the summer.  It will be great to finally see all of my original artwork in nice, new frames!

My website needs a new look, so where is the obvious place to begin?  A new logo of course!  It's all part of my if-you-give-a-mouse-a-cookie approach to life.  I'm sure I'll come up with a bunch of other projects that are all necessary to get a new website up and running: new photos of my artwork, new frames for the artwork to take pictures in--you get the idea.  But first things first, here is the new logo!

And in case you're wondering, yes I am working on making progress on those frames.  I've put together four so far, and am just waiting for the finish to dry so I can package up the finished project.  Here are the frames in progress, pictures of the final product to come this weekend:

Cut and ready for glue

Glued and clamped.  Having only 2 clamps might be why this has taken me so long. . .

Decision Time

It's that time of year when I would normally be sending out applications left and right to juried art shows and festivals all across Maine, looking ahead to summer when I drag my poor husband around to help me set up my booth and sell my artwork.

I've decided to do things a little differently this year.

I'm taking the summer off from shows to *finally* get all of my original artwork framed and ready for sale.  If you remember my kickstarter campaign, I had hoped to raise enough money to have each of my pieces professionally framed.  My project wasn't fully funded, so I'm going a different route--I'm building my own.  Each and every one.

So this summer will be dedicated to perfecting the art of frame building.  I'll keep you posted on my progress and will post each individual piece for sale on Etsy once they are complete.   In the meantime, you can still find all of my prints and goodies for sale on my Etsy site, and can expect new drawings and side projects throughout the summer.   Frames can't be my only project, you know.

Wish me luck!
